All my sins remembered
I shifted down to first gear on my ten speed bicycle. The flat wetlands of Criggan rushed by as I kept up a steady pace.
The main road beckoned in the distance. No more speed, as I am almost there.
I stopped at the junction of the main road, surveying the traffic before I turned left. It was all clear, so I turned onto the main road, picking up speed as I went along. The traffic hurries by, overtaking me with ease.
On the other side of the road I spied a lay-by. There was no traffic on the other lane.
I looked behind me for traffic, ready to turn right into the lay-by. All was clear, so I turned right to cross the road.
The squealing of tyres alerted me to my error. I looked to my right and a car was bearing down on me. Too late, frozen in horror the bumper caught me on the calf. The blow catapulted me to the sky and I went up,up,up,up.
I looked down and below me I saw a car,a twisted bicycle and a body on the road.
The driver opened the door of the car and a bright light illuminated the scene.
A voice inside my head said;
"Come."
And I was sucked into a dark tunnel and into a world of light.
In that world of light was a being made of light.
And that being was love.
I looked and on the being I could see thousands of murals of my life, from the moment of my birth to the car hitting me on the road. Among those there were three which stood out.
The first was a city street.
I was crossing a busy road and coming towards me was a tramp, a down and out.
"Can you spare the price of a coffee," he said.
At that time I had about ten pounds on me,but I told him that I did not have any money.
I felt bad about that incident, for I realised the meanness of my heart.
In the second mural I was introduced to a long lost cousin. We had not seen each other for about fifteen years. I got talking to him and in conversation It transpired that he was a packer in a factory. I remembered at the time feeling superior to him. I felt above him, a lowly packer in a factory.
Now, looking at the scene I feel shamed by my thoughts.
In the third I was on a rifle range doing target practice. Scattered here and there were wooden targets that popped up every now and then.
I was waiting for the target when a rabbit hopped along my range of vision.
I quickly turned my rifle and shot at the rabbit. The bullet sliced the rabbits' belly and blood and entrails came out of its body.
"Killer", I thought and a great sadness and remorse descended over me, for I knew it to be wrong to spill blood and take a life.
My eyes were awash with tears.
Regret and sorrow for my sinful deeds,I looked to the being for forgiveness.
"You are forgiven, said the being. Go and love with your life, do well to your fellow men and sin no more."
And with that I found myself looking down at a car,a twisted bicycle and a body on the road.
The driver opened the door of the car and I found myself back in my physical body.
I opened my eyes and felt sharp tendrils of pain in every part of my body.
"Are you all right? asked the driver.
"Yes," I croaked, relieved to be given a second chance.
